Location: East Wenatchee, WA
The East Wenatchee Gateway project is a collaborative vision between Forte Architects and the City of East Wenatchee for a welcoming, inviting and usable public site at the corner of 9th and Valley Mall Parkway. There are two existing buildings located on the nearby half-acre site consisting of a slightly dilapidated Texaco Station and a storage shed at the rear of the property.
The intent of the project was to create a welcoming community space at one of the heavy traffic hubs of East Wenatchee. Many different design strategies had to be explored while still maintaining a safe environment for users and to be a strong visual connection to the Loop Trail Systems. The proposed renovation of the service station would include a structural alteration of the existing awning by constructing a new canopy that pays subtle homage to the famous Miss Veedol airplane. Additionally, both interior and exterior spaces would be improved, dramatic lighting and sun shading devices added, as well as a small prep kitchen and storage area so that the function of the space remained versatile. Other site upgrades may include “athlete fill stations” for drinking water, rest, and bicycle repair. A raised platform would utilizing removable canvas sails for shading and sound control for outdoor speakers, bands, etc. New vegetation intermingled with outdoor lounging areas would create a lively buffer from the street and provide a sense of security.
